The International Criminal Court (ICC) announced on Thursday that it is set to rule on former President Rodrigo Duterte’s appeal against the decision of the Pre-Trial Chamber I concerning his camp’s challenge to the jurisdiction of the Court.
“Judgement in the above appeal will be delivered in open court on Wednesday, 22 April 2026 at 11h00,” the scheduling order read in a document dated April 2.
On October 23, 2025, the Pre-Trial Chamber I junked Duterte’s challenge to its jurisdiction over his alleged crimes against humanity, countering that it can “exercise its jurisdiction in the present case over the crimes alleged against Mr. Duterte that were committed on the territory of the Philippines while it was a State Party.”
Duterte’s camp appealed for a reversal of this ruling, requesting the ICC Appeals Chamber to find that there is no legal basis for proceeding with the charges against Duterte. Moreover, they sought his immediate and unconditional release.
On March 7, it was reported that the Appeals Chamber upheld the decision in favor of keeping Duterte detained as he awaits trial over alleged extra-judicial killings (EJKs) and other abuses related to his notorious war on drugs.
