Former presidential spokesman Atty. Harry Roque said he has advised former Ako Bicol party-list Rep. Zaldy Co to seek asylum abroad, saying that reported possession of a “golden passport” or second citizenship would not guarantee protection should the Philippine government move against him.
In an interview with Magandang Umaga Pilipinas on DZRH News, Roque said he has repeatedly reminded Co to apply for asylum, describing it as the “ultimate protection” amid ongoing developments involving Philippine authorities.
“Palagi ko siyang pinapaalalahanan na kinakailangan kumuha siya ng Asylum dahil ‘yan ang ultimate protection,” Roque said. He added that reports of Co having a golden visa or second passport "hindi makakapagbigay proteksyon sa kanya kapag gumalaw ang gobyerno" (cannot provide protection if the government moves) stressing that only asylum status would offer legal safeguards under international frameworks.
Roque said he does not inquire about Co’s exact location during their communications, focusing instead on his condition and needs.
“Kami talaga [kapag] naguusap, hindi ko tinatanong kung nasaan siya ang tinatanong ko lang kung siya’y nasa mabuting kalagayan, kung siya ay may mga pangangailangan.”
He also said Co is reportedly receiving legal advice from European lawyers, which he suggested may differ from his recommendation to pursue asylum.
“Ang pagkakaintindi ko meron din siyang mga European na mga abogado na sa tingin ay not giving him the same advice that I am giving him.”
Meanwhile, the Department of Justice (DOJ) confirmed that Co is no longer in the custody of Czech authorities.
Acting Justice Secretary Fredderick Vida made the disclosure following a meeting with Czech officials in Prague. Despite the development, Vida said Co remains within the Schengen area, though his exact location is unknown.
