Leyte Representative Martin Romualdez is set to announce his resignation as House Speaker during the opening of the legislative session this afternoon, as reported by RH Milky Rigonan.
Romualdez will be succeeded by House Deputy Speaker Faustino “Bojie” Dy of Isabela, a member of the Federal Party of the Philippines, the same political party as President Bongbong Marcos.
According to sources, Romualdez met yesterday at Malacañang with President Marcos and House Majority Leader Sandro Marcos. Prior to this meeting, Romualdez convened a party caucus at the House of Representatives to disclose his plan to step down.
House leaders reportedly opposed his resignation but respected his request to allow him to decide.
The decision comes amid mounting pressure in the House, where Romualdez is said to have become a “target” following allegations linking him and several other lawmakers to irregularities in flood control projects.
As rumors of his resignation circulated last night, Romualdez’s office was cleared of all personal and official items.
Meanwhile, the Philippine Senate also recently faced a leadership change when 15 senators moved to oust Senate President Francis Escudero, reinstating Senator Tito Sotto III as the chamber’s presiding officer.
