Once her term ends on June 30, Vice President Leni Robredo would be a launching a movement against individuals who are spreading disinformation and fake news on social media, her spokesman said over the weekend.

In their weekly radio program, Robredo's spokesman lawyer Barry Gutierrez said they would be launching “a broad movement as well as initiatives to address and fight disinformation and fake news on social media.”

"It is clear that this kind of trend is detrimental to our democracy and the public discourse," Gutierrez said.

"It is being discussed among groups of lawyers to file a lawsuit against those who continue spreading disinformation, and also possibly against those platforms that host such materials like the social media platforms that we currently have,” he added.

The program would run alongside Robredo's upcoming Angat Buhay non-governmental organization, which woou;d begin a day after her term ends, July 1.

Robredo, who ran for president during the May elections, was named to be the top target of disinformation on soecila media with her archrival, President-elect Ferdinand Marcos Jr. as the number one beneficiary of fake news.

According to Gutierrez, the movement would not be "solely for Robredo."

"This is also for the welfare of our entire country and society. We need to bring out the truth. Our discussions must be based on facts and data, and not on fake news," he said.
