The Office of Senator Robin Padilla on Monday denied circulating social media posts alleging that the senator is planning to investigate Presidential son and Ilocos Norte 1st District Rep. Sandro Marcos, calling the claims “fake news.”
“The posts circulating online are not true — they are simply another piece of fake news,” the senator’s office said in a statement posted on social media.
Padilla’s chief of staff, Atty. Rudolf Philip Jurado clarified that the senator's Senate committees — Public Information and Mass Media, and Cultural Communities and Muslim Affairs — have no jurisdiction over matters related to any supposed probe involving the Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI) or the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee.
“Senator Padilla does not want to preempt any action or decision of the ICI or the Blue Ribbon Committee,” the statement read.
The office emphasized that these issues fall completely outside the mandate of the committees chaired by Padilla.
"The Office also clarifies that it does not have the authority, in aid of legislation, to subpoena or summon any individual regarding issues outside the mandate of Senator Padilla’s committees," Jurado said.
“We urge the public to verify information through official and credible sources to avoid being misled by fabricated or distorted claims,” it added.
The clarification comes after former Ako Bicol Rep. Zaldy Co implicated the presidential son in alleged budget insertions. Marcos has earlier said he is prepared to face the ICI should he be asked to appear.
