Senator Risa Hontiveros seeks to consolidate opposition groups following the outcome of the 2025 midterm polls.
Speaking at the Kapihan sa Senado on Tuesday, Senator Risa Hontiveros stressed the importance of maintaining a strong opposition bloc in the Senate—one that will continue to provide checks and balances and serve as a fiscalizing force.
Moreover, she emphasized that her main focus now is to unify and consolidate allies and supporters in the critical first nine months after the election, aiming to build stronger cohesion than what was achieved after 2022.
"Mag-consolidate kami kahit ‘yung process of selection nung strongest possible slate namin sa 2028 na lalaban at mananalo, we can decide that somewhere up the road," said Hontiveros.
"Palagay ko kung magtatagumpay kami in the next 9 months na pag-isahin ‘yung lahat nung mga pwersa namin, then patuloy na tataas ‘yung level of confidence sa isa’t-isa, and pati ‘yung level of confidence and comfort going into a selection process somewhere up the road pa siguro many months pa or a few years from now," she added.
The consolidation effort, she clarified, includes individuals who supported the Akbayan Partylist, the tandem of Senators-elect Bam Aquino and Kiko Pangilinan, and the Mamamayang Liberal (ML) Partylist.
Hontiveros noted that if more members join the current minority bloc, they might be in a position to vie for official recognition as the Senate minority in the 20th Congress.
Ultimately, she underscored the crucial role of a solid opposition at this time, noting that their focus also includes early preparations for the 2028 elections.
