House prosecutor Terry Ridon on Tuesday denied that the prosecution panel was rushing to shorten the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte after withdrawing three of the four articles of impeachment against her.
Ridon rejected suggestions that the decision was driven by the panel’s belief that it had enough votes to secure a conviction.
“I don’t think we have the numbers as of the moment,” Ridon said when asked whether the prosecution was moving quickly because it had the numbers.
He said the panel had not rushed its presentation of evidence on allegations of unexplained wealth, adding that the length of the trial would ultimately depend on how the defense presents its evidence.
The House prosecution panel on Tuesday withdrew three of the four impeachment articles against Duterte, opting to focus its case solely on allegations of unexplained wealth.
The Senate impeachment court, through Presiding Officer Francis Escudero, allowed the withdrawal, leaving the unexplained wealth charge as the sole remaining article of impeachment against the vice president.
