The remains of Mary Ann De Vera, the overseas Filipino worker (OFW) caregiver killed in a missile attack in Tel Aviv, Israel, were brought home on Saturday, March 14.
According to the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), De Vera’s remains arrived at 4:30 AM, and were received by her husband, Bernie Lavarias. He was accompanied by OWWA Administrator Patricia Yvonne “PY” Caunan, Israel Ambassador to the Philippines Her Excellency Dana Kursh, and AGIMAT Partylist Representative Bryan Revilla.
This is to ensure a smooth process and immediate assistance for the late OFW’s family. Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Undersecretaries Barnard Olalia, Felicitas Bay, and Dominique Rubia-Tutay were also present to extend their condolences.
Meanwhile, the OWWA and DMW Region 1 personnel oversaw the transfer of De Vera’s remains to her family in Pangasinan.
De Vera died in February this year, after a missile struck her apartment building and she was hit by debris.
In a joint House hearing earlier this week, Philippine Ambassador to Israel, Aileen Mendiola, assured the panel that they are working with the Israeli government and are trying to get the remains of the late OFW aboard the flights flown by Israeli-owned airlines.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog also met with De Vera's husband to convey his condolences in person. He also assured Lavarias that he would receive immediate financial assistance, including a monthly stipend through the state's national insurance system.
