The Visayas Grid will be placed under yellow and red alert statuses on Friday, May 29, due to forced outages and derated capacities of several power plants, according to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).
In an advisory, the NGCP said the Visayas Grid will be under red alert status from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Prior to and after the red alert, the grid will be placed under yellow alert status from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Peak demand in the Visayas Grid reached 2,542 megawatts, while available capacity stood at only 2,562 megawatts.
The NGCP attributed the thinning power supply to the unavailability of four major coal-fired power plants in the Visayas, including TVI 1, TVI 2, PEDC 3, and KSPC Units 1 and 2.
High system demand forecast also contributed to the situation.
The NGCP said a total of 952.4 megawatts remained unavailable to the grid due to forced outages and plants operating at limited capacities.
“11 plants are on forced outage since May 2026, one plant since March 2026, three plants since 2025, two plants since 2024, two plants since 2023, and one plant since 2021, while 15 plants are running on derated capacities, for a total of 952.4MW unavailable to the grid,” the NGCP said.
Meanwhile, the Luzon and Mindanao grids are expected to operate under normal conditions.
A red alert status is issued when power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid’s regulating requirement.
A yellow alert status is declared when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement.
