The Visayas and Mindanao grids continue to face tight electricity supply conditions on Friday, August 14, according to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).
The grid operator said the schedule for the Visayas grid is as follows:
Red Alert
- 5 p.m. - 9 p.m.
Yellow Alert
- 1 p.m. - 5 p.m.
- 9 p.m. - 10 p.m.
NGCP said the grid has an available capacity of 2,269 megawatts (MW) against a peak demand of 2,511 MW.
The grid operator also reported that several generating plants were on forced outage, while 14 plants were operating at derated capacities, resulting in a total of 829 MW of unavailable capacity.
NGCP said the factors that contributed to the red and yellow alerts in the Visayas grid are as follows:
- Unavailability of Visayas' large coal plants TVI 1 and TVI 2
- Limited power import from Mindanao (due to maintenance outage of GNPK 2, emergency shutdown of GNPK 1 due to boiler tube leak)
Meanwhile, the Mindanao grid will be placed under yellow alert.
Yellow Alert
- 1 p.m. - 4 p.m.
- 6 p.m. - 7 p.m.
The grid has an available capacity of 2,800 MW, while peak demand is expected to reach 2,619 MW.
NGCP said 13 plants are on forced outage, including seven plants that have been out since July, one since June, two since January, one since 2025, and two since 2024.
Another eight plants are operating at derated capacities, resulting in a total of 661.4 MW of unavailable capacity.
The grid operator said the factors that contributed to the yellow alert in the Mindanao grid are as follows:
- GNPK 2 (Maintenance Outage, July 28, 2026)
- Emergency shutdown of GNPK 1 due to boiler tube leak (August 09, 2026)
The NGCP said a red alert is issued when the power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid's regulating requirement.
Meanwhile, a yellow alert is declared when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid's contingency requirement.
