The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) hoisted a red alert over the Visayas grid on Wednesday, June 10, due to thin power supply and high electricity demand, raising the risk of rotational brownouts.

In an advisory, the NGCP said the Red Alert was in effect from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., followed by a Yellow Alert from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on the same day.

At the time of the alert, available capacity stood at 2,429 megawatts (MW) while peak demand reached 2,421 MW, leaving a narrow operating buffer for the grid.

NGCP attributed the tight supply situation partly to a "decrease in HVDC power imports from Mindanao," which contributed to the declaration of the red alert condition.

The grid operator also reported a total of 890.4 MW currently unavailable to the grid. This includes multiple generation constraints: eight power plants on forced outage in June 2026, eight plants on forced outage since May 2026, one plant offline since March 2026, three plants since 2025, two since 2024, two since 2023, and one since 2021.

In addition, 12 generating units are operating on derated capacity, further limiting supply.

"A red alert status is issued when power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid’s regulating requirement," the NGCP said.

"A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement," it added.
