Families of alleged victims of extrajudicial killings (EJKs) joined by several militant groups staged a “Rally for Justice” at Boy Scout Circle in Quezon City on Monday, February 23, calling for accountability, justice for victims of alleged extrajudicial killings (EJKs) and respect for human rights.
The protesters gathered in the city ahead of the confirmation of charges hearing of former President Rodrigo Duterte before the International Criminal Court (ICC) today.
In a report by RH Val Gonzales, the protest coincided with the opening day of the ICC’s confirmation of charges proceedings against the former chief executive, which stem from allegations of crimes against humanity linked to the government’s anti-drug campaign.
The ICC is investigating allegations of crimes against humanity in the Philippines, including killings, torture, and sexual violence, in connection with the so-called “war on drugs” campaign carried out between November 2011 and March 2019.
Protesters repeatedly chanted, “Duterte is guilty!” and “Justice for EJK victims!”
The rally was led by the Akbayan Partylist, whose members expressed their belief that the former president should be held accountable for the cases filed before the ICC.
Akbayan Partylist President Rafaela David said the spirit of the EDSA People Power Revolution, which ousted a dictator in 1986, should serve as a guide in the fight against impunity and in ensuring accountability for alleged crimes.
The group emphasized that one of the enduring lessons of the EDSA revolution is that anyone who abuses power will eventually be held accountable at the proper time.
The protest lasted several minutes and concluded peacefully, with participants dispersing along Tomas Morato and Timog Avenue in Quezon City.
