Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III jogged around Camp Crame’s oval Friday morning, July 25, despite heavy rain.
According to PNP spokesperson PBGen Jean Fajardo, the early jog around 6:20 a.m. was part of Torre’s regular fitness routine, but also doubled as training for the preparation for his scheduled ‘charity boxing match’ against Davao City Acting Mayor Baste Duterte.
"10 rounds. Part of his preparation for Sunday’s charity boxing match,“ said Fajardo.
Torre earlier said that the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Manila has been prepared as the venue for his match against Duterte.
When asked by DZRH for a comment on Duterte’s condition that all government officials undergo drug testing before the match, the PNP chief has yet to issue a direct response.
"If you're really serious about this, kung gusto mo 'yung charity na 'yan and you laid some condition, and let me lay my own conditions... pakiusapan mo 'yang amo mo na presidente, let it come out of his mouth that all elected officials should undergo a hair follicle drug test. Papalagan ko 'yang charity-charity mo na 'yan," Duterte said.
Following his 'jogging in the rain,' Torre proceeded to attend scheduled meetings.
On Thursday, July 24, Torre began boxing training with six rounds of drills inside the PNP gym.
In a report by RH Edniel Parrosa, Torre's trainer, Police Senior Master Sergeant Tomacino Maglangit, praised the 55-year-old PNP chief, especially highlighting his natural power.
However, Maglangit admitted they are still working on Torre’s endurance, speed, and head movement, as the training camp had been delayed for about six months.
In an earlier interview, Torre admitted that while his stamina may not be what it used to be, he is taking the match seriously, which aims to raise funds for typhoon victims.
Torre also shared that he has past experience in boxing, tracing back to his time as a cadet at the PNP Academy.
On Sunday, July 21, Duterte challenged Torre to a fistfight, saying the PNP chief was only acting tough because of his position.
“Matapang ka lang naman, you have the position. Pero kung suntukan tayo, alam ko kaya kita kung ganon lang. You are a coward. You are nothing without your position,” Duterte dared Torre on his podcast.
The top cop accepted the challenge and suggested turning it into a charity boxing match, with all proceeds going to victims of flooding and the southwest monsoon.
Meanwhile, Torre said that in case Baste Duterte fails to show up for their scheduled bout, proceeds from sponsors will instead be used to provide aid to those affected by recent storms.
