The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has officially recognized Quezon City as one of the 72 newly designated members of the Global Network of Learning Cities, a distinction that highlights the city’s strong commitment to inclusive education and lifelong learning across communities.

The recognition affirms Quezon City’s sustained efforts to promote learning beyond traditional classrooms through public libraries, health and life skills education, sectoral training programs, and cultural and civic initiatives that engage residents of all ages. The designation places Quezon City alongside 425 member cities from 91 countries working to advance education as a driver of sustainable development.

Mayor Joy Belmonte welcomed the inclusion, saying the city’s approach centers on making learning accessible in everyday spaces. “In Quezon City, we believe that learning is not confined to classrooms alone. It happens across everyday spaces and throughout all stages of life, which is why we work to ensure that wherever our QCitizens are, they have equitable opportunities to develop their full potential,” she said. She added that inclusive, high-quality education strengthens empowerment, social cohesion, and economic and cultural growth.

Since 2019, the city government has expanded support for public schools through the provision of learning materials, classroom equipment, and ICT resources, while broadening tutoring, scholarship, language, and skills training programs aimed at improving learning outcomes. These initiatives target learners from basic education to adult education, reinforcing the city’s push for equitable access to opportunities.

Vice Mayor Gian Sotto and Majority Floor Leader Councilor Aly Medalla also pledged continued legislative support for education-focused measures. As part of the network, Quezon City will gain access to technical guidance and global collaboration opportunities to further enhance its lifelong learning programs. It joins Balanga, Legazpi, and Baguio as Philippine members of the UNESCO network, with Baguio and Quezon City among the newest additions.
