The Quezon City Police District (QCPD) said Friday it has launched an investigation into a viral video showing a police officer responding to a confrontation during the Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) rally along EDSA near the People Power Monument on June 30.
In a statement, QCPD said the incident involved a motorcycle rider and rally participants and began as a verbal altercation that risked escalating into a physical clash.
Police said the officer deployed at the scene intervened immediately to defuse tensions, citing the need to maintain public safety and restore order amid a large crowd gathered for the demonstration.
“The officer operated under the principle of maximum tolerance, in accordance with Philippine National Police operational procedures and Batas Pambansa Blg. 880,” the statement read, referring to the Public Assembly Act of 1985.
Authorities said the officer’s priority was to prevent violence and ensure the safety of all individuals present.
QCPD said it is conducting a “thorough and impartial” probe, which includes reviewing available evidence and gathering statements from those involved. It assured the public that due process would be strictly observed.
Police also called on the motorcycle rider seen in the video, as well as witnesses, to come forward and provide information that could help establish the facts of the incident.
Further updates will be released once the investigation progresses and findings are confirmed, the QCPD said.
The district reiterated its commitment to uphold the rule of law and ensure transparency, adding that all actions will be guided by public safety and the impartial maintenance of peace and order.
