President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. announced that medalists in the 2026 Palarong Pambansa will receive cash incentives from the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), marking the first time such rewards will be granted in the country’s premier sports competition for student-athletes.
In a video message aired during the opening ceremony, Marcos said the incentive program aims to recognize the hard work, dedication and excellence of young athletes competing in both regular sports and para-games.
“Masaya akong ibalita sa inyo sa kauna-unahang pagkakataon ay maglalaan ang Philippine Sports Commission ng incentive para sa mga medalista sa regular sports at sa para-games bilang pagkilala sa inyong husay,” the president said.
The president said the move is intended to honor the athletes’ achievements and encourage continued participation in sports at a young age.
Marcos also reminded more than 10,000 athletes that they represent not only their schools and regions but also serve as inspiration to fellow Filipino youth pursuing their dreams.
He assured participants of the government’s continued support for grassroots sports and youth development programs, emphasizing the importance of nurturing future athletes.
The president urged competitors to give their best while enjoying the spirit of the games, adding that beyond medals and victories, athletes should value discipline, perseverance, respect and sportsmanship.
The 2026 Palarong Pambansa officially opened at the D.O. Plaza Memorial Sports Complex in Agusan del Sur, the province’s first time hosting the annual event.
Nearly 16,000 delegates from 18 regions, the National Academy of Sports and Philippine Schools Overseas are participating in the competition, which carries the theme “Unlock the future through sports,” highlighting the role of athletics in nation-building, character formation and youth empowerment.
As of 10 p.m. on May 27, the National Capital Region led the medal tally in regular sports with 24 gold, 13 silver and 18 bronze medals. Calabarzon followed with 17 gold, 16 silver and 10 bronze, while Central Visayas ranked third with 13 gold, 11 silver and eight bronze.
