Tensions flared between youth protesters and marshals outside the office of the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) at the Bonifacio Technology Center in Taguig City on Wednesday, Aug. 19.

The protesters staged a lightning rally to condemn the Pax Silica initiative, calling for the government to reject the project, according to a DZRH report of Jecelle Ricafort.

The situation became tense after marshals attempted to drive the demonstrators away from the area, resulting in pushing, shoving, and heated exchanges between the two sides.

The protest was led by the League of Filipino Students (LFS), Agham Youth, Gabriela Youth, and Katribu Youth.

The groups criticized President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for allegedly pushing ahead with the initiative despite concerns raised by the public.

“Reject Pax Silica!” the protesters said.

They raised concerns over what they described as a lack of transparency, possible environmental damage, and the project's potential impact on the country's electricity and water supply.

The youth groups also accused the BCDA of denying that farmers could be displaced by the proposed 1,600-hectare Pax Silica hub in New Clark City, Tarlac.

They further alleged that the US-led initiative could have a militarist agenda that may involve the Philippines in proxy conflicts between global powers.

Following the confrontation, the protesters and police agreed to allow a five-minute protest action outside the BCDA office.

The LFS maintained that the protesters have the right to express their concerns, while police pointed out that the gathering had no permit.

After the brief protest, the demonstrators dispersed peacefully.
