Progressive groups staged a protest along Kalaw Avenue in Manila on Monday, July 13, marking the 10th anniversary of the landmark arbitral tribunal ruling on the West Philippine Sea (WPS).
The demonstration, led by Pambansang Lakas ng Kilusang Mamamalakaya ng Pilipinas (PAMALAKAYA) and Anakpawis Party-list, drew activists calling for the protection of Philippine sovereignty, as reported by RH Tina Nolasco.
Protesters denounced what they described as increasing interference by the United States and its allied countries in the country’s affairs.
The rally coincided with the anniversary of the 2016 ruling by an international tribunal that invalidated China’s sweeping claims in the disputed waters.
As of 9:50 a.m., a portion of Kalaw Avenue heading toward Roxas Boulevard was closed due to the protest activity outside the U.S. Embassy.
Authorities advised motorists to take alternate routes, including Finance Road or proceed via Padre Burgos Avenue.
No immediate reports of untoward incidents were recorded as the protest continued.
