Prosecution counsel Atty. Erwin Matib pointed out that Vice President Sara Duterte’s declared income from sales, revenues, receipts, and fees exceeded her compensation income in 2021, raising questions about her alleged “sideline” practice of profession.
During the impeachment proceedings, Matib cited Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) records showing Duterte declared ₱2.36 million in gross compensation income and ₱4.65 million under sales revenues, receipts, and fees.
“Mas malaki pa yung [kita sa] sideline ni VP Sara sa practice of profession,” Matib said.
BIR Atty. Anne Lorraine Garcia-Marquez confirmed that the amount under sales revenues, receipts, and fees was higher than Duterte’s compensation income.
“Based po dito sa BIR records, mas malaki po yung sa practice of profession. Or yung nakalagay sa sales revenues, receipts, fees,” Garcia-Marquez said.
Garcia-Marquez, however, clarified that Duterte’s income tax return does not specifically identify the ₱4.65 million as income from her practice of profession. She said the amount was linked to Duterte’s Certificate of Registration as a professional with legal activities.
Defense counsel Atty. Kristine Ferrer objected to the interpretation, noting that the document only identifies the amount as “sales revenues, receipts, fees.”
