The House prosecution panel will no longer present former senator Antonio “Sonny” Trillanes IV as a witness in the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, lead prosecutor Rep. Gerville Luistro said Thursday.
“The prosecution has finally decided not to present former Senator Sonny Trillanes. We seek the kind indulgence of the honorable impeachment court for the belated final position on this particular concern,” Luistro told the impeachment court.
The decision came after the prosecution had earlier identified Trillanes as one of its next witnesses for the proceedings on Duterte’s alleged unexplained wealth under Article II of the Articles of Impeachment.
On Wednesday, the prosecution had sought Trillanes’ appearance as a witness, but Presiding Officer Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero rejected the issuance of a subpoena for him to appear on Day 32.
The prosecution is currently presenting evidence related to Article II, which alleges that Duterte failed to fully disclose assets, liabilities and net worth in her Statements of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth (SALNs) and continued to maintain business interests while serving as vice president.
