In line with National Stress Awareness Month, the program Experts Opinion featured a special interview focused on understanding and managing stress.
During the interview, registered psychologist and psychometrician Prof. Justin Ray N. Chavez explained that stress is a natural response, describing it as “alarm system,” mentally and emotionally. He noted that while stress is normal, it becomes harmful when it no longer supports an individual’s well-being.
The discussion also explored common triggers of stress, particularly financial instability and work-related pressures.
“Talagang marami pong nagsu-suffer because of poverty and financial instability, even yung problema po sa work… at nauuwi mo yung stress from work sa bahay,” Chavez said, highlighting how everyday challenges can significantly affect mental health.
Chavez further identified three main types of stress: acute, episodic acute, and chronic stress. He warned that chronic stress is the most serious.
"In terms of psychology, yung chronic is quite more serious one,” he cautioned, as it may lead to severe physical and emotional consequences if left unmanaged.
To cope with stress, Chavez encouraged practical strategies such as proper sleep, physical activity, and seeking professional help when needed.
“Don’t hesitate to be checked by an expert,” the professor reminded viewers, emphasizing that mental health must be prioritized and caring for oneself amid life’s pressures is crucial.
