A Catholic priest in Ecuador died on Saturday, October 17, after a crucifix displayed behind him fell and struck him while he was celebrating a livestreamed mass, according to church officials and video of the incident.
The priest, identified as Rev. Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, served as parish priest at the Church of Perpetual Relief of the Central Vicariate, the Archdiocese of Guayaquil confirmed.
In its announcement, the archdiocese mourned his passing, saying he “has left to the House of the Father to enjoy his presence and glory.”
Footage of the incident showed Molinari standing behind the altar and facing the congregation when the crucifix suddenly fell from behind him. He appeared unaware of the falling object and did not get back up after being struck.
Parishioners were heard screaming and crying in the livestream as some rushed to his aid.
The incident was captured during the live broadcast of the religious service.
