The Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS) has condemned the reported shooting of radio broadcaster Jay Lavapiez, who survived an ambush by unidentified motorcycle-riding suspects in Barangay Cagay, Roxas City early Monday.
In a statement dated June 22, 2026, the task force said it “expresses deep concern” over the attempt on Lavapiez’s life at around 5 a.m. while he was driving along a national highway on his way to his radio station.
Authorities said at least two suspects on motorcycles allegedly blocked the broadcaster’s vehicle and opened fire. Lavapiez survived the attack. Investigators later recovered four spent shells from the scene.
The PTFoMS, together with the Philippine National Police Media Vanguards, has launched an investigation to determine the motive and identify those responsible.
Regional police director PBGen. Randulf Tuano ordered units under the Police Regional Office 6 to immediately pursue leads and treat the case as a priority.
The task force said the incident underscores the need to strengthen protections for journalists, noting their role in informing the public and supporting democratic accountability.
It also condemned all forms of violence and intimidation against members of the media, saying such acts “have no place in a democratic society.”
“We stand in solidarity with Mr. Lavapiez and all media professionals,” the statement read, adding that press freedom must be safeguarded and that authorities will continue working to ensure justice is served.
The PTFoMS urged cooperation among media organizations, civil society, and government agencies to improve safety measures for journalists and prevent similar attacks.
