President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. spearheaded the inspection of the Pasig–Marikina River Channel Improvement Project (PMRCIP) Phase IV at the Marikina Bridge Under Loop in Barangay Sto. Niño, Marikina City, along with other officials from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), and local government units (LGUs).

As Marcos personally inspected the ongoing installation of culvert pipes along Sumulong Highway, Marikina City Mayor Marjorie Ann "Maan" Teodoro briefed the President on the ₱17.45-billion project, highlighting its timeline, scope, and long-term benefits. Phase IV of the PMRCIP involves structural and non-structural measures to reduce flooding caused by the overflow of the Pasig and Marikina Rivers.

The High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) pipes will direct excess stormwater to the Marikina River, which helps prevent flooding in the areas. The new drainage system will run along Sumulong Highway in Marikina City from J.P. Rizal Street to Balante Creek, as it starts from the Marikina River exit to the Marikina bridge.

Teodoro stressed the importance of ongoing deeper dredging operations to increase river capacity and prevent overflow during extreme weather events. She also called for a whole-of-government approach and stronger community involvement, particularly in waste management.

Furthermore, there will be some facilities, such as the Marikina Gate Control Structure, that will be implemented, which will stop the floodwater from Sierra Madre and will divert the Manggahan floodway directly to Laguna Lake, according to DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan.

Bonoan said that they are hoping to finish the widening of revetments in 2028. However, he assumed that the Marikina Gate Control Structure would probably be done by 2029 or 2030.

He also shared that Phase 5 is already completed using the local funds, while Phases 1-4 were funded by the Japanese government.

The project will help protect flood-prone areas in Marikina, Pasig, and Quezon City, as well as the municipalities of Cainta and Taytay in Rizal Province once completed.
