The Visayas Grid will be placed under red and yellow alert statuses on Wednesday, August 12, due to insufficient power supply and limited power imports from Mindanao, the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) said.

The red alert will be in effect from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., while yellow alerts are scheduled from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.

As of 7 a.m., the Visayas Grid had an available capacity of 2,153 megawatts (MW) against a peak demand forecast of 2,394 MW, according to NGCP.

NGCP said the alert declarations were partly caused by the unavailability of three large coal plants in Visayas — TVI 1, TVI 2 and CEDC 1.

The grid operator also cited limited power imports from Mindanao due to the maintenance outage of GNPK 2, the emergency shutdown of GNPK 1 following a boiler tube leak, and high forecast system demand.

NGCP said six plants were on forced outage in August, while 14 other plants were operating at reduced capacities. These outages and deratings resulted in a total of 931.5 MW of unavailable capacity.
