Pope Leo XIV has appointed Filipino Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle and San Pablo Bishop Marcelino Antonio Maralit as members of the Dicastery for Communication, the Holy See announced on Thursday, April 9.
The appointment forms part of a broader restructuring and strengthening of the Vatican’s global communications arm, which oversees all media, press operations, digital platforms, and messaging strategies of the Holy See.
The dicastery plays a key role in ensuring coordinated and effective communication of Church teachings and papal activities across international audiences.
Cardinal Tagle, who currently serves as pro-prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization (Section for First Evangelization and New Particular Churches), is among the most prominent Filipino figures in the Vatican hierarchy.
His inclusion in the communications body further underscores his expanding responsibilities in curial governance and global Church outreach.
Bishop Maralit’s appointment likewise highlights continued Filipino representation in key Vatican offices, reflecting the Church’s emphasis on diverse regional voices in its communication strategy.
According to the Vatican press release, the Holy Father appointed several members to the Dicastery as part of ongoing administrative updates, reinforcing its mandate to modernize and unify communication efforts across the global Catholic Church.
