Vice President Sara Duterte has no plans to resign from office despite the possibility of a conviction in her impeachment trial, her defense team spokesperson said Wednesday.

Defense spokesperson Atty. Michael Poa said Duterte and her lawyers have not discussed her resignation, although the possibility has been considered as one of several options.

“I think I can answer that categorically, hindi namin pinag-uusapan ng vice president ’yan. But obviously, as a lawyer, naisip na namin matagal na that’s one of the options,” Poa said during a post-trial briefing.

Poa, however, stressed that Duterte currently has no intention of stepping down as vice president.

“But the vice president has no plans of resigning as vice president now. She’s always considered the 32 million people that voted for her,” he said.

Earlier, former Commission on Elections Chairman George Garcia told reporters that even if Duterte is convicted in the impeachment trial and subsequently resigns, she could still potentially run for president in the 2028 elections, subject to the applicable constitutional and legal provisions.

Duterte is facing impeachment proceedings over allegations involving the misuse of confidential funds and other accusations.
