Around 6,000 police officers will be deployed in the vicinity of the Senate ahead of the July 6 impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said.
PNP public information chief Col. Allen Rae Co said the initial deployment is part of security preparations to ensure order during the high-profile proceedings.
“Initially, the Philippine National Police will be deploying around 6,000 personnel around the Senate,” Co said.
He clarified that, as of now, there has been no request for police deployment inside the Senate premises.
“We have not yet received any special request to deploy personnel inside the Senate premises,” he added.
Authorities have also not monitored any groups applying for permits to hold rallies near the Senate on the opening day of the impeachment trial.
Duterte is facing multiple allegations, including the misuse of public funds, accumulation of unexplained wealth, bribery involving officials of the Department of Education, and issuing threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
The PNP said it will continue to coordinate with other security agencies and remain on alert for any developments related to the proceedings.
