The Philippine National Police (PNP) has intensified security measures around Mayon Volcano, strengthening its communication network in barangays within the expanded risk area as authorities prepare for the possible extension of the volcano’s danger zone from 6 kilometers to 7 kilometers.
The move comes after the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) warned that Mayon’s unrest may continue, prompting discussions on widening the current permanent danger zone to better protect residents from potential hazards such as pyroclastic density currents and ashfall.
Police authorities said enhanced coordination on the ground is crucial to enforce stricter access control, as some residents have reportedly continued to enter restricted areas through unauthorized routes despite existing prohibitions.
PNP Chief Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. has ordered “maximum tolerance” in dealing with violators, emphasizing that police will escort individuals out of the danger zone and may file charges against those who insist on entering restricted areas.
Aside from increased police patrols, authorities are also considering the use of aerial surveillance to monitor entry points and prevent unauthorized access.
Mayon Volcano remains under Alert Level 3, indicating heightened unrest. PHIVOLCS recently recorded volcanic activity, including pyroclastic events, reinforcing the need for stricter enforcement of safety protocols and possible expansion of the exclusion zone to safeguard nearby communities.
