The Philippine National Police (PNP) has yet to receive a formal request from the International Criminal Court (ICC) to protect witnesses set to testify in the crimes against humanity case against former President Rodrigo Duterte.

PNP Chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. assured that the police force is ready to ensure the safety of witnesses, stressing that protecting the public remains one of their primary responsibilities, RH Edniel Parrosa reported.

The police chief explained that they would first need to identify the individuals who are concerned about their safety in connection with the ICC proceedings.

Nartatez’s remarks came after ICC prosecutors sought protection for 55 witnesses who are expected to testify in the case against Duterte over his administration’s war on drugs. The prosecution pointed out that most of the witnesses are still residing in the Philippines, raising the need to ensure their safety as the proceedings move forward.

While no formal request has been made to the PNP as of writing, Nartatez said the agency remains prepared to carry out its mandate of protecting the public, including witnesses who may require security assistance.

“Depending on the situation, kami na mismo mag-a-act. But as of now, kaya ko nga tinanong who are the witnesses, and then we need to know who are the witnesses,” Nartatez explained.
