The Philippine National Police (PNP) is investigating a possible large-scale smuggling network following the seizure of P2.6 billion worth of unregistered cigarettes in separate operations in Batangas and Malabon.
The Highway Patrol Group (HPG) discovered P1.5 billion worth of smuggled cigarettes in Batangas after acting on a tip about a stolen vehicle, where several container trucks loaded with illegal products were found. No suspects were arrested at the site.
Later that evening, authorities uncovered another P1.1 billion worth of contraband cigarettes inside a warehouse in Malabon after apprehending a motorcycle rider for a traffic violation. One suspect was arrested, while investigators believe the goods may have been stolen from the warehouse.
PNP Acting Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the police are coordinating with the Bureau of Customs (BOC), Bureau of Internal Revenue (BI), and other agencies to trace the source, route, and possible financiers of the smuggling operation. He noted that the case may involve organized criminal groups and warned that those responsible could face charges under the Anti-Agricultural Sabotage Act (RA 12022).
