The Philippine National Police (PNP) is conducting a cross-matching of data to determine a possible connection between illegal petroleum operations in Navotas City and Laguna province.

According to a report by RH Edniel Parrosa on Rapido Hataw Balita on Thursday, PNP Chief Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said authorities are examining whether the recycled oil comes from a single source and if it is linked to organized oil pilferage groups.

“We are currently cross-matching the profiles of the suspects arrested in Laguna with our database of previous ‘paihi’ operators in Navotas and nearby provinces. Sinisilip natin kung iisa lang ang pinagkukunan ng recycled oil at kung saan ito ibinibenta. Kung may link to organized oil pilferage groups; we will pursue them aggressively,” Nartatez said in a statement.

Authorities earlier arrested nine individuals in Navotas, confiscating 65,000 liters of diesel valued at PHP 9.75 million at the Navotas East Port Complex.

PNP spokesperson Pol. Brig. Randulf Tuano said the police are currently investigating the ownership of the seized fuel.

Meanwhile, six individuals were arrested on Wednesday inside a hotel and resort compound in San Pablo City, Laguna, for allegedly siphoning, storing, and adulterating petroleum products in violation of the Oil Pilferage Law. Two of the suspects were hospitalized after sustaining injuries while attempting to jump from a tanker during the police operation.

Authorities said the Laguna case could provide a critical lead in connecting various oil theft operations.

Overall, the PNP has filed 15 complaints against 34 suspects involved in hoarding and profiteering of petroleum products.

The incidents were reported across the country: five in Eastern Visayas, four in the Bicol Region, three in Metro Manila, two in Central Luzon, and one in the Davao Region.
