The Philippine National Police (PNP) is currently validating reports that two gunmen involved in the Bondi Beach mass shooting in Australia may have received militant training in the Philippines, Edniel Parrosa reported.
The shooting, which occurred on Sunday, December 14, left 15 people dead and sparked international concern.
PNP spokesperson PBGen. Randulf Tuaño confirmed that coordination with the Bureau of Immigration (BI) is underway to track the suspects’ movements and determine if they received training or support in the country.
“Coordination with BI is underway,” said Tuaño.
Reports indicate that the suspects traveled to the southern Philippines in November, prior to carrying out the attack.
Acting PNP Chief PLtGen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. emphasized that the police are maintaining heightened vigilance to deter provocateurs, secure borders, and prevent any potential security threats within the Philippines.
“The PNP is maintaining heightened vigilance to deter provocateurs and prevent any security threat,” Nartatez Jr. noted in a separate statement.
Authorities have also called for continued public cooperation and vigilance as investigations unfold.
The PNP’s investigation aligns with international law enforcement efforts to track cross-border militant networks and ensure that returning nationals or visitors do not pose security risks.
