The Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) are working together to ensure the safety of travelers this Holy Week, government agencies announced on Tuesday.
In a joint press conference, PNP Chief Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said that nearly half of the entire police force’s manpower was deployed to assist Department of Transportation (DOTr) in the removal of road obstructions and ensure public safety.
“We have all the personnel—in fact, almost half of the Philippine National Police’s (PNP) strength, around 98,000, ay made-deploy po ito for utilization for peace and order, and at the same time, for emergency response and ensure public safety,” he said, later stating that police have been on heightened alert, and will continue to be until Monday next week.
In addition, DOTr Secretary Giovanni Lopez announced that the PCG is on full alert and has deployed 17,000 personnel to secure airports, ports, and transport terminals across the country.
The coast guard has also strategically stationed their vessels by ports carrying the most passengers, to offer their assistance to anyone left stranded, Lopez said. These ports are usually those in Marinduque, Batangas, and Calapan in Oriental Mindoro.
An estimated 2.6 million travelers are expected to flock to ports nationwide, the agencies said.
