Philippine National Police Chief Gen. Melencio Nartatez Jr. has ordered police units nationwide to exercise “maximum restraint” and avoid any escalation of tension if they encounter Sen. Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa, amid heightened security developments involving the former police chief.

Nartatez directed local and regional police commanders to strictly observe operational protocols and human rights standards, stressing that law enforcement actions on the ground must remain measured and professional.

The directive follows reports that the National Bureau of Investigation has classified the senator as “armed and dangerous,” as authorities continue monitoring his situation. Dela Rosa, a former PNP chief and key figure in the country’s anti-drug campaign, has not been taken into custody.

In a statement, Nartatez also appealed for calm and urged Dela Rosa to “exercise sense of duty” in respect of institutions enforcing the law.

Officials from the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) described Dela Rosa as a “good intelligence officer,” acknowledging that any attempt to apprehend him would not be easy due to his background and experience in law enforcement.

During a flag-raising ceremony at Camp Crame on Monday morning, Nartatez did not directly address the ongoing manhunt but reminded personnel to remain impartial and fair in enforcing the law.

“The trust and confidence of the Philippine people are earned through consistent service, fairness in the implementation of the law, and sincerity in responding to the needs of the public,” Nartatez said.

Meanwhile, CIDG Director Maj. Gen. Robert Alexander Morico dismissed reports that the senator had been spotted abroad, particularly in Malaysia. Morico said intelligence assessments indicate that Dela Rosa remains in the Philippines.

Authorities have not disclosed further details on ongoing tracking efforts.
