The Philippine National Police (PNP) announced the creation of a special investigation task group (SITG) following an ambush targeting Shariff Aguak Mayor Akmad Ampatuan on Sunday, January 25, as reported by RH Edniel Parrosa.

Acting PNP Chief Police Lieutenant General Joe Melencio Nartatez Jr. vowed that Maguindanao will not be allowed to descend into a “wild west” scenario.

The task group, composed of BANGSAMORO police personnel, will conduct forensic examinations of vehicles and firearms linked to the suspects, some of whom were killed during follow-up operations carried out by the Philippine Army and PNP.

The SITG will focus specifically on identifying the mastermind behind the attack and dismantling the network of gunmen involved.

Mayor Ampatuan survived the ambush unscathed, as his reportedly bulletproof Land Cruiser remained intact despite the attack with a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG). Two of his security personnel sustained minor injuries.

General Nartatez has ordered BANGSAMORO police to maintain a 24/7 presence in the area to prevent further incidents. Authorities are also pursuing leads on how the RPGs used in the attack were sourced and distributed within Maguindanao del Sur.

The PNP has reiterated its commitment to ensuring public safety and swiftly bringing those responsible to justice.
