The Philippine National Police (PNP) has relieved a police driver and his immediate supervisor from their posts following a collision involving a police coaster and a vehicle along the EDSA Busway in Quezon City on April 17.

PNP Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the personnel involved will undergo corrective measures as an internal investigation continues.

The incident went viral on social media and was later reported to the National Police Commission. Authorities said the Toyota Coaster, which was assigned for “free ride” (libreng sakay) operations, entered the EDSA Carousel Busway despite restrictions. The driver reportedly proceeded into the dedicated lane and later confronted the other motorist involved, including asking for the driver’s license.

The police chief acknowledged during a flag-raising ceremony at Camp Crame that a PNP unit violated busway regulations.

“I’m asking the concerned directorial staff to issue the corresponding reminders, and to ensure that corrective, whether punishment, be served to that erring personnel,” Nartatez said.

PNP Logistics Support Service Director PBGen. Noel B. Vallo said the vehicle was assigned to travel from Commonwealth Avenue to Fairview when the incident occurred.

“The route that was given to him is the Commonwealth area going to Fairview. So at that time, the vehicle had just exited and was heading to his area, and he miscalculated the left turn coming from the fourth lane,” Vallo said.
