The Philippine National Police–Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG) has issued subpoenas to several Ateneo de Manila University coaches and players as part of its ongoing investigation into the drowning incident that claimed the lives of two student-athletes in Aurora.
CIDG Director Police Major General Robert Alexander Morico II confirmed that multiple individuals who were present during the team’s beach training activity in Dipaculao, Aurora have been ordered to appear before investigators on June 15.
Authorities said around two dozen persons of interest, including members of the coaching staff and players, are being required to submit statements to help establish what transpired during the incident involving athletes Rene Clert Baterbonia and Divine Adili.
Morico also confirmed that the CIDG has formally requested the Department of Justice (DOJ) to issue an Immigration Lookout Bulletin Order (ILBO) to prevent certain individuals from leaving the country while the investigation is ongoing.
“We requested from the Department of Justice to prevent certain persons of interest from leaving the country… What I can say right now is we have requested from the DOJ,” Morico said.
Reports indicate that one of the individuals included in the request is a foreign national, although authorities did not officially confirm identities.
Investigators are continuing to determine whether negligence or criminal liability may be established in connection with the training activity held at a resort in Dipaculao, Aurora, where the two athletes drowned.
