Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr on Monday reminded police personnel to remain non-partisan and disciplined as the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte formally begins in the Senate.
According to a report by RH Edniel Parrosa on Damdaming Bayan, during the flag-raising ceremony at Camp Crame, Nartatez stressed that the police force must not align itself with any political interest or personality amid the high-profile constitutional process.
“Let me remind all personnel to remain impartial, disciplined and faithful to your oath,” Nartatez said.
He added: “We do not serve personalities or political interests. We serve the Constitution, uphold the rule of law and protect the Filipino people.”
The PNP chief reiterated that the organization is mandated to enforce the law and ensure public safety, not to support any political figure or agenda.
He also cited the importance of maintaining discipline and adherence to police protocols, similar to the restraint shown during recent mass gatherings organized by Iglesia ni Cristo.
Nartatez praised the PNP’s implementation of maximum tolerance during the three-day rally, despite what he described as minor issues during the first day of the event along EDSA.
As the impeachment trial begins on July 6, the PNP maintained a directive of maximum tolerance, noting that no credible security threats have been monitored in connection with the proceedings.
Authorities have deployed more than 6,000 police personnel to secure key areas. This includes around 3,250 officers stationed in major locations around the Senate and approximately 2,900 personnel from the Civil Disturbance Management (CDM) units on standby for rapid response if needed.
The Senate, sitting as an impeachment court, is set to formally open the trial at 2 p.m. on Monday, marking the start of a constitutional process that could determine whether Duterte will be removed from office.
Duterte faces allegations including the misuse of confidential funds, unexplained wealth, bribery, and issuing death threats. However, she has denied all accusations against her.
