The Philippine National Police (PNP) has called on local government units (LGUs) nationwide to designate specific firecracker zones in their communities to ensure public safety during the Christmas and New Year celebrations, when the use of fireworks and pyrotechnics typically spikes.
Acting PNP Chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. made the appeal after inspecting firecracker stores in Bocaue, Bulacan, a town known for its pyrotechnics industry.
The move aligns with earlier recommendations from the Department of Health (DOH), which encouraged LGUs to organize community fireworks displays. Such controlled events aim to reduce injuries and fatalities resulting from unregulated firework use.
Nartatez emphasized that all safety standards set by the Firearms and Explosives Office (FEO) must be strictly followed.
These include requiring valid permits for all firecracker vendors, proper storage, and clear labeling of products. The sale of illegal, oversized, overweight, or imported firecrackers without proper registration is strictly prohibited.
The FEO has also released a list of illegal firecrackers, specifying penalties for those caught selling or distributing these banned items.
The PNP chief instructed local police forces to intensify enforcement campaigns against illegal firecracker sales and other violations to ensure a safe holiday season for all.
