The Philippine National Police (PNP) emphasized its commitment to respecting the public’s right to peaceful assembly while maintaining order, as it reported a generally peaceful and orderly nationwide transport strike on Thursday, March 19.

In a statement, the PNP said transport groups carried out protest actions in various parts of the country to raise concerns over rising fuel prices and other sectoral issues. Despite the demonstrations, authorities recorded no major incidents.

The police said personnel were deployed in key areas to ensure public safety, manage traffic, and assist commuters affected by the strike. Coordination with local government units and other agencies was also maintained to minimize disruption and ensure a prompt response to any situation.

However, transport group PISTON earlier raised concerns over alleged harassment during a protest in Sucat, Parañaque.

According to the group, some police officers reportedly required protesters to present permits and identification cards and allegedly took a microphone from a driver who was speaking.

Drivers questioned why they were being subjected to such actions instead of focusing on individuals allegedly involved in corruption.

PNP Chief Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. underscored that the police force continues to balance the protection of civil liberties with the enforcement of law and order, particularly during mass actions.
