The Philippine National Police (PNP) arrested nine Chinese nationals and one Filipino suspect in a large-scale, anti-illegal mining operation in Cantilan, Surigao del Sur, seizing an estimated ₱50.5 million worth of heavy equipment.
The operation, conducted from 9:00 p.m. on April 9 to 1:00 p.m. on April 10 at Carac-an downstream in Barangay Lobo, was led by operatives from the Regional Intelligence Division 13, through the Tracker Intelligence and Protection Unit, in coordination with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
Authorities said the suspects are now under the custody of the Cantilan Municipal Police Station for proper disposition. Confiscated equipment and other mining paraphernalia were turned over to the DENR for safekeeping and further action.
PNP Chief PGen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. said the operation highlights the police force’s intensified campaign against environmental crimes, particularly illegal mining activities involving foreign nationals.
The PNP noted that the crackdown aligns with its Focused Agenda, particularly in enhancing police operations through intelligence-driven enforcement against high-value illegal activities that threaten environmental sustainability and local communities.
