A transport group is planning to seek a ₱2 increase in jeepney fares as drivers continue to struggle with rising fuel prices.
In an interview during Balansyado on Monday, Mody Floranda, national president of Piston, said the government should already implement a fare increase as drivers’ income continues to shrink due to the steady rise in petroleum prices.
“Napapanahon na na mabigyan ng dagdag-kita yung ating mga tsuper para tuloy-tuloy na makapag-serbisyo, at tuloy-tuloy na makapaghanap-buhay ang ating mga drayber,” Floranda said during the interview.
Floranda said the group’s National Council has decided to file a petition for a ₱2 fare increase before the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board on March 16. He noted that the last jeepney fare adjustment was in October 2023, despite continued increases in fuel costs since then.
He added that diesel and gasoline prices have risen by more than ₱60 per liter since the last fare hike, significantly affecting drivers’ earnings. While acknowledging that commuters may also be affected, Floranda said the proposed increase could help drivers recover some losses and sustain their livelihood.
The transport leader also reiterated the group’s call for the government to push for a ₱1,200 living wage, saying higher wages would help workers and commuters cope with rising transportation and living costs.
