The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has warned the public of possible eruptions from the Taal Volcano following its elevated Real-time Seismic Amplitude Measurement (RSAM).

In an interview with DZRH, PHIVOLCS Director Dr. Teresito Bacolcol, the agency has released an advisory concerning the heightened RSAM, which measures the strength of quakes underneath a volcano, since Saturday, August 9.

“A total of 19 volcanic earthquakes (have) been recorded by the TVN (Taal Volcano Network) since 09 August 2025. Visual observations noted a moderate to voluminous plume from the Taal Main Crater since the start of the RSAM increase,” the advisory dated August 10 read.

Bacolcol mentioned this had also occurred on July 6 and 17, resulting in a phreatomagmatic eruption on the latter date.

The volcano is currently under Alert Level 1, indicating it is in an “abnormal condition.”

“At Alert Level 1, sudden steam-driven or phreatic or minor phreatomagmatic eruptions, minor ashfall and lethal accumulations or expulsions of volcanic gas can occur and threaten areas within TVI (Taal Volcano Island),” PHIVOLCS said.

The agency cautioned locals residing near the volcano against entering the 4-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone as a volcanic event may take place at any time.
