Superheated plume activity has been detected at the crater of Mt. Kanlaon on Friday evening, indicating ongoing volcanic unrest, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).
PHIVOLCS said time-lapse footage captured the activity from 11:05 p.m. to 11:59 p.m. on August 21 by the Nature’s View (VKNV) Lowcost IP Camera in La Castellana, Negros Occidental.
In its 24-hour monitoring bulletin covering 12 a.m. Friday to 12 a.m. Saturday, PHIVOLCS also recorded eight volcanic earthquakes at Kanlaon.
The volcano emitted 2,092 tons of sulfur dioxide and generated a plume that rose 100 meters above the crater before drifting generally eastward and southwestward.
Kanlaon remains under Alert Level 2, indicating an increased tendency toward hazardous eruption.
PHIVOLCS reminded the public that entry into the volcano’s four-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) is strictly prohibited and urged residents and visitors to remain vigilant and follow established safety protocols.
