PHIVOLCS reports renewed lava effusion, ‘uson’ activity at Mayon Volcano
by Luwela Amor20 May 2026

Mayon Volcano’s effusive eruption continued for the 134th consecutive day on Tuesday, May 19 with the volcano generating incandescent lava flows, pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) or “uson,” and rockfalls, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

In a sped-up camera footage released by PHIVOLCS, lava effusion with collapse-fed PDCs was observed along the Bonga and Mi-isi gullies at around 8:07 p.m. on May 19.

In its 24-hour observation bulletin released Wednesday, PHIVOLCS reported 26 volcanic earthquakes during the monitoring period, including 15 volcanic tremors lasting between 11 and 80 minutes. The agency also recorded 326 rockfall events and three PDC signals.

A crater glow or “banaag” remained visible at the summit, indicating ongoing volcanic activity.

Mayon emitted sulfur dioxide at an average rate of 658 tons per day on May 19. Meanwhile, steam-laden plumes rose up to 400 meters above the crater before drifting toward the southwest and west-southwest.

Ground deformation monitoring showed a short-term deflation of the volcano’s edifice, although inflation was beginning to develop on the northeastern slopes.

Alert Level 3 remains in effect over Mayon Volcano.

PHIVOLCS reiterated that entry into the six-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone is strictly prohibited due to the continuing threat of lava flows, rockfalls, ash emissions, and pyroclastic density currents.
