The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) on Wednesday reported renewed pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) at Mayon Volcano following active volcanic activity observed on the morning of May 13.
According to the PHIVOLCS, lava-collapse PDCs were seen descending the volcano’s slopes. These dangerous volcanic flows consist of fast-moving hot ash, volcanic gases, and rock fragments caused by collapsing lava deposits.
The activity was observed from the town of Camalig, Albay, where residents captured plumes of ash and smoke coming from the volcano. Photos shared by Camalig Mayor Caloy Baldo showed the volcanic activity beginning at around 11:29 a.m.
Baldo urged residents to remain cautious and follow government-issued safety measures.
“The public is advised to wear face masks, remain indoors as much as possible, and follow all safety advisories issued by the government,” Baldo said.
Phivolcs said additional information regarding Mayon’s activity will be released as monitoring continues.
