The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) issued a tsunami warning following a magnitude 7.0 earthquake that struck offshore Sarangani on Sunday morning, June 8.

According to PHIVOLCS Tsunami Information No. 1, the earthquake occurred at 07:37:47 AM with an epicenter located at 05.99°N, 125.17°E offshore Sarangani. The quake was recorded at a depth of 10 kilometers.

In its evaluation, PHIVOLCS warned that coastal areas may experience tsunami waves exceeding one meter above normal tides, with potentially higher waves in enclosed bays and narrow straits.

The first tsunami waves are expected to arrive between 07:37 AM and 09:37 AM (PST) and may continue for several hours.

Authorities strongly advised immediate evacuation of residents in coastal areas of the following provinces: Sarangani, Davao Occidental, Tawi-Tawi, Sulu, Basilan, Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga Sibugay, Sultan Kudarat, and South Cotabato.

Boat owners in harbors, estuaries, and shallow coastal waters were urged to move vessels to deeper waters and stay offshore until further notice.

PHIVOLCS emphasized that this will be the only tsunami information bulletin issued unless new developments arise, and urged the public to monitor official updates.
