The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has issued a cancellation of its earlier tsunami warning for coastal communities after a powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck Manay, Davao Oriental, on Friday.
“Any effects due to the tsunami warning have largely passed and therefore DOST-PHIVOLCS has now cancelled all Tsunami Warnings issued for this event,” the agency said.
The tsunami warnings encompassed coastal communities in the provinces of Davao Oriental, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Leyte, Southern Leyte, and Eastern Samar. The warning called for the immediate, preemptive evacuation of residents in these areas.
Earlier, the Tandag Surigao Del Sur Sea Level Monitoring Station for Tsunami Detection (TSTP) logged a tsunami wave around 30 centimeters in height at 10:20 a.m.
The earthquake jolted the Municipality of Manay, Davao Oriental, at 9:43 a.m., from a depth of 23 kilometers.
