The Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) confirmed the launch of the Long March 8A rocket by the People’s Republic of China early Friday, March 13, with projected debris expected to fall within identified drop zones near Philippine waters.

According to PhilSA, the rocket lifted off from the Hainan International Commercial Launch Center in Wenchang, Hainan, at around 3:49 a.m. Philippine Standard Time.

The first drop zone is located approximately 162 nautical miles from El Nido and 185 nautical miles from Puerto Princesa in Palawan, as well as 101 nautical miles from Patag Island.

Authorities said this area falls within the Philippine Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

A second projected drop zone was identified about 32 nautical miles from Hadji Muhtamad in Basilan, 44 nautical miles from Pangutaran Island in Sulu, and 47 nautical miles from Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park.

PhilSA said this area lies within the Philippine archipelagic waters.

The agency explained that unburned rocket components, such as boosters and fairings, are typically jettisoned as rockets travel into outer space.

Although debris is not expected to fall on land or populated areas, PhilSA warned that it may pose hazards to ships, aircraft, fishing vessels, and other maritime activities passing through the identified zones. Some debris may also float at sea and eventually drift toward nearby coastlines.

PhilSA urged the public and maritime operators to immediately report any sighting of suspected rocket debris to local authorities and warned against retrieving or touching such materials, which may contain toxic substances, including remnants of rocket fuel.
